‘Sleep Tight’

Before sprung mattresses, Shaker beds consisted of a wooden frame with an interwoven rope base. The Shakers placed a thin mattress on top of this and for as long as the rope was taut the bed was very comfortable. However the rope stretched and in order to be comfortable the rope frequently needed to be pulled tight. Hence the phrase.

Almost all Shaker designs were a development and refinement of existing furniture pieces that the American pioneers brought with them from various European countries.

This is an example of that heritage although the bed is now designed with a comfortable sprung mattress and no longer has a rope base.

The pencil post bed has become an American classic. This is the refined and elegant Shaker version.
